Parenting Tips From ParentSuccess.com ~ Bedwetting
| |
Occasional bed-wetting is not unusual for children under the age of 10.
Lined underpants or big-child diapers may have to serve as a temporary
solution. Frequent bed-wetting can be a medical problem because certain
infections of the bladder and urinary tract produce uncontrolled urination.
The first place to start on this problem is at your physician's office.
When you are sure that a physical ailment is not the problem, you could use a
bed-wetting alert device that consists of special pants with a lining that
detects moisture and sets off a buzzer similar to a loud alarm clock. Since
bed-wetting does not begin abruptly, the child has time to wake up and go to
the bathroom when the buzzer sounds.
Over a few weeks, this alarmclock for bedwetting can teach a child to wake up and use the bathroom. It is battery-operated and there is no danger of shock. One source for the device is Sears Home HealthCare catalog which can be obtained by calling (800) 326-1750. Similar devices are clipped into a standard disposable panty-liner attached to a beeper worn on the shoulder. These are available from Dri-Sleeper (www.dri-sleeper.com) or Potty Pager (Ideas for Living) at www.pottypager.com or 1285 N Cedarbrook Rd., Boulder, CO 80304. (303) 440-8517. Parents must get up with the alarm, too. As with most child-rearing problems, a gadget by itself will not solve it. You may have to help your child shake the cobwebs out enough even to find the bathroom! A little support for a job well done and you're back in bed without a big event.
