Sean will open his presents on Christmas morning, take each plastic piece out of its cardboard frame and may be momentarily delighted. But soon the moment will pass and Sean, never having been exactly sure he had asked for "enough" will probably be short of complete satisfaction.
And Sean's parents, not sure what will produce the magic twinkle, may try to overcome the challenge and threatening guilt by the quantity of gifts ("If we get enough, we're bound to hit on a winner").
The truth is that no piece of plastic will produce joy and gratitude for long. The children who are basically happy and satisfied before Christmas will be the ones basically content in January.
So what can a parent give as the "right" gift? For the boxes under the tree, I'm afraid we're all stuck with guessing. But in our hearts a new resolve may be the best gift of all.
