Parenting Tips From ParentSuccess.com ~ Creativity or Criticism?
| |
Creativity requires confidence. That's why most parents instinctively tolerate "mistakes" when children investigate a new challenge. But during the long parenting days of summer, errors may be harder to tolerate and parents might be tempted to criticize, correct or take over altogether just to get the jobs done.
Mom tolerated a half-hour of mistakes and spills to hear Keith say finally, "OK, Mom, I'm putting my cake in the oven!"
Parents can learn to tolerate the inconvenience of allowing their son or daughter to make mistakes as he or she improves with practice, if they view this practice as a sign of growing up. Give responsibility gradually now, this summer. Don't wait until the good-byes on the steps of a college dormitory or in the back of a church just before a wedding. As the kids try new activities, keep the praise and compliments handy even before success shines through. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing even if you do it poorly until you learn to do it well. Most people want to be around those who help them feel worthwhile, happy, and capable. That gives them the confidence to be creative.
