Parenting Tips From ParentSuccess.com ~ Who Is Gifted?
Soccer and basketball coaches are not the only adults putting children to the test and seeking the stars.

The schools are forever testing our children looking for the "gifted." They do it because they have special programs for special children. And some of us want "trophy children."

But how would a parent recognize, and how should a parent react, to a child's "gifts?"

The coaches have their practices, but outside of sports, how do you determine what test and what score indicates gifted or talented? Schools frequently limit definitions of "gifted" to areas where symbols are manipulated - math, vocabulary and music. They use testing programs that often narrow the focus to academic subjects that use these symbolic abilities.

Other gifts, such as social skills, artistic ability and common sense, are not so easily evaluated. It may even seem silly and arbitrary to think of the "County Art Champion" or the "Social Skills State Champion." But these other talents need to be recognized so that the opportunities provided the child and a parent's expectations can keep pace.

A broad view of "gifted" and "talented" can alert parents to encourage and support a child's unusual abilities wherever they discover them.
