Reading assignments often lead the student to this mistake of leaving out
the doing in learning. Many of my students have said, "I can't believe I did
poorly. I went through (stared at) all the material for the test!" If you
only read it (not really practice) and never use it, it will be gone soon.
If reading is the assignment, have your student take reading notes -
preferably on cards. For each page of reading the student should make some
note. "Never turn a page without writing something," should be the rule.
